The Annual Minority Mentoring Picnic ("MMP") is a premier Florida wide annual event since 2004. The MMP has grown exponentially each year and is well attended by many judges, established lawyers and law students from every school in Florida. Every student, lawyer and judge who attends the MMP will have an opportunity to find a mentor or mentee in an fun and informal setting. This year's picnic is themed Passport to Success.

This month, our guest speaker will be ASHWIN KRISHNAN, Senior Counsel for the Miami Marlins. Come listen to Mr. Krishnan discuss the pathways a law student can take to work in the sports and entertainment industry, and the various legal challenges he faces on a daily basis running the legal office of a professional sports team.
Ashwin Krishnan is Senior Counsel for the Miami Marlins. As the club's lead in-house counsel, Ashwin oversees the legal services provided to each of the team's departments, including Baseball Operations, Ballpark Operations, Corporate Partnerships, Ticket Sales, Broadcasting and Communications, Marketing, Special Events, Human Resources, and the Marlins Foundation. Additionally, he manages all litigation related to the Marlins and Marlins Park, and he was involved with the development of Marlins Park which opened in April 2012. Ashwin received his J.D. from Harvard Law School, his M.Phil. from the University of Cambridge, and his A.B. from Harvard University. Ashwin is a member of the Florida Bar and the Dade County Bar Association. He was born and raised in San Diego, California.

Asian-Americans are the fastest growing minority group in the legal field, and as of 2010, made up almost half of all minorities in the legal field. However, those numbers are heavily skewed by the geographic distribution of Asian populations in the United States, and many states still lack an Asian-American presence in the legal field.

September 7, 2013 - Navin Pasem, received the Young Businessperson of the Year Award
SABA's President Elect, Navin Pasem, received the Young Businessperson of the Year Award on Saturday September 7, 2013 at the Tampa Indo US Chamber of Commerce's Annual Gala event, The Banyan Ball. The Chamber recognizes the professional achievements of its members (and nonmembers) based on very competitive criteria for the select few awards that are handed out. Navin received the award beating out some of Tampa's fastest rising stars for candidates ages 35 and younger. Also, especially worth noting is that this was the very first time an attorney or a law firm was recognized for the award. Past awards have focused heavily on conventional businesses and healthcare institutions. Job well done, Navin!

On September 5, 2013, the South Asian Bar Association of Florida Jacksonville division held a CLE approved panel at Florida Coastal School of Law titled "Hanging Up Your Shingle". The panelists consisted of SABA's Director Meenakshi Hirani, Esq., our North Florida officer Sarah Gulati, Esq., and another member Ashwin Sharma, Esq. The panel was a great opportunity for law students to get the first hand insight on where to start, when thinking of opening a practice after law school. The panel was interactive and students have requested they come back for more panels. Thanks to Florida Coastal School of Law for hosting SABA and Priyanka Ghosh-Murthy, Esq., for co-hosting. SABA Florida is proud to send past, present and future SABA Florida Presidents to San Francisco, California for the 10th annual North American South Asian Bar Association ("NASABA") convention from June 20 - June 23, 2013. Attending the conference on behalf of SABA Florida: SABA Florida Founder and Past President, Rahul Ranadive; Past President, Sumeet Chugani; Current President, Rishi Bagga; and President-Elect, Navin Pasem.
NASABA's annual convention is the place to meet, learn and network with other attorneys with an interest on issues facing South Asians in the legal profession around the world. This year's convention promises to deliver a stellar line up of legal stars and decision makers, including opening remarks by California Attorney General Kamala Harris, panel discussions with General Counsels from Oracle, Wipro and Sempra Energy and a keynote speech from Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Sri Srinivasan, who will be introduced as a U.S. Court of Appeals Judge for the D.C. Circuit on June 14, will be receiving the NASABA Pioneer Award at the convention.
